PHYSICAL ACTIVITY

Picture

2021/2022

We are an Active Class!

We began our initiative to decrease sedentary time during the school day in February and March 2022.
Each class decided on 3 activities that they would like to do during transitions between lessons.
The girls love doing these and have more energy and are more focused after partaking in them.
The activities include go noodle videos, cardio desk drumming, Joe Wicks workout videos, games outside in the yard and lots of other fun activities.

SKIP INTO SPRING 2022

We had a very enjoyable day on the first of February when we held our 'Skip into Spring' Activity Day.
Our Active School Committee along with great help from 5th class pupils organised and ran station activities for each class from Juniors to Sixth.
It was a huge success and a wonderful start to Spring. We were even blessed with beautiful Spring weather!

Christmas Activities 2021

We all got into the Christmas mood on Friday 17th December. All the girls were decked out in their Christmas jumpers and hats.
Our Active School Committee led the school with their own dances to Christmas favourites 'Jingle Bell Rock' and 'All I Want for Christmas Is You'!

New Playground Equipment

The girls are delighted with the addition of new hoops which can be played with during breaktime.
Skipping ropes are now available to all classes also.

Active Break Challenge

Each class took part in the Active Break Challenge which ran for four weeks from November 15th-December 10th.
Everyone was encouraged to take an active break during lessons at least once a day.
Activities included go noodle dances, yoga, skipping, running/walking in the yard and lots of other games and fun activities.
Everyone benefited from the break and returned to their school work with increased energy and concentration.
Maith sibh cailíní!

Station Activities November 2021

We had great fun on the 16th November when our wonderful Active School Committee and some pupils from 6th class organised and ran activity stations for 1st class.
Impressive movement skills such as running, hopping, skipping, jumping, throwing, catching and striking were all on show.
Well done to everyone involved!

Halloween Parade and Fun Games 2021

Each class participated in a Halloween walk/parade around the school yard.
There were some very spooky and inventive costumes on show.
The student council organised some fun games for each class.
It was a great way to begin our mid term break!

European School Sports Day 2021

We were delighted to take part in 'European Sports Day' in September 2021.
To celebrate, the Active School Committee along with some very willing 6th class girls, set up and organised station activities for the Junior and Senior Infants.
1st - 6th class took part in lots of different activities on the astro turf and tennis courts.
We had a great day and were blessed with good weather.
A huge thank you to Clonakilty Sports Complex who allowed use to use their fantastic facilities. We are so grateful to have a wonderful sporting facility on our doorstep.

Wake Up and Shake Up!

We love Wake up and Shake Up here in St Joseph's.
It takes place every Wednesday morning.
Our Active School Committee lead the dances and exercises each week. They love choosing the music!

Getting Active in the Classroom!

We love getting active in between lessons in the classroom. We do lots of different activities to get our bodies moving and our minds ready for learning!
These include stretches, yoga videos, go noodle dance videos and clapping games.

Yard Buddies!

We are delighted to have yard buddies in place again.
The sixth class love playing and chatting to the junior and senior infants!

Getting Active in other Subjects!

Here in St Joseph's we  love to include physical activity in other subjects.

Freestyle Fridays!

Freestyle Fridays are a firm favourite of everyone in St Joseph's!
Every Friday, music is played at break time. It puts everyone in a good mood. There are always great dance moves on show!

ACTIVE SCHOOL WALKWAY!

Our caretaker, Rob, recently put up the Active School Walkway in our school grounds. The walkway is signposted at various points in the yard.

Cycle Skills Training!

The girls in 2nd, 3rd and 4th classes are taking part in a cycling skills training course for five weeks.
The course is aligned to SPROCKET ROCKET, Cycling Ireland's fun skills cycling programme.
The programme is aimed at:
  • Teaching children the four FUNdamental cycling skills of Balance, Pedalling, Braking and Cornering.
  • Providing a strong cycling skill foundation for young riders.
  • Skill development, including general cycling skills which will lay the foundation for more advanced learning of specific cycling skills in the future.
  • Fostering enjoyment and 'want' of participation.
  • Teaching rider's fair play and rules at their level, rather than promoting a win at all cost attitude.

The Daily Mile!

Each class are now participating in the Daily Mile. The girls walk/jog/run/skip and side step their way to their Daily Mile!
A mile is the equivalent to 15 laps of the big yard!
The Daily Mile is simple and free and gets children out of the classroom for fifteen minutes every day to run or jog, at their own pace, with their classmates, making them fitter, healthier, and more able to concentrate in the classroom.

More information can be found on https://thedailymile.ie/

Playground Markings!

The girls are delighted with the new playground markings which were put down in February 2019.
Lots of new games and plenty of fun can be seen on the yard at small break and big break each day!

Rainy Days

Unfortunately, at times, we are unable to go outside for break on rainy days.
Instead, each class enjoys dancing to Go Noodle.
The girls really benefit from getting up out of their seats and moving!

60 Minutes Physical Activity Challenge

The girls in the senior classes have taken part in the 60 minutes Physical Activity Challenge once  per term.
The girls are learning that we need to get 60 minutes of Physical Activity each day.
There are so many benefits including feeling energised and happier.

Playground Leaders

Our 5th class pupils act as playground leaders during breaktime once a week. They devise games at stations for the junior classes.

Active Break

All classes are taking part in the Active Break in the classroom initiative which is running for four weeks from November 19th -December 14th 2018.
Each class aims to take at least one active break each day in between lessons. It can be a running, dance or an active break.
Each class records their activities on the poster in their classroom.
